Small but annoying new features with InDesign CS5

Posted by Marco on Aug 22, 2010 in INDD

I’ve been working with InDesign CS5 for some time now and there are several small things that drove me nuts at first. (I’m a Creative Suite 3 migrant, so some of you CS4 users might already know about these things). First thing I noticed right away was I now need to pay close attention as to where exactly I click when I grab an InDesign image frame. Why? Well ,I didn’t know this but I tend to always grab an image frame in the center. When I work I pick up and move stuff around at lighting speed but I started noticing empty image frames. Now I knew I filled that frame and I also noticed the outline frame when I released it and jumped to another part of the page. But why was it empty now?

It was the new interface. Every image now has a circle when you ‘mouse-over’ the frame. But because I usually click the center of the frame when I want to grab it, I now clicked the new circle so InDesign activates the frame’s content instead of the frame itself. As I was moving things around and working rather fast I hadn’t noticed this at first. I’m sure I’ll get the hang of it, but for now I have to train myself to not click the center of an image frame. It looks like there’s no way to deactivate this new behavior.

I recognize your behaviour, still it happens to CS4 users as well. This new “content donut” feature is CS5 only. I find it very nifty but he, i’m not used to click on centers of any box. Good luck! Regards, Mickey

Marco, you can turn off this new InDesign CS5 feature via View > Extras > Hide Content Indicator.

This had been driving me nuts. Thanks for the tip on how to turn it off. I’ve been searching unsuccessfully because I didn’t know what the stupid doughnut thing was called!

Thanks so much!  I can see how this feature might be useful to someone who is just being introduced to Indesign in CS5, but for those of us who’ve used many earlier versions, it is very annoying!  I can’t tell you how many times I’ve stumbled over that feature cursed it.  Thanks for showing me how to turn it off!
