Some time ago I held a talk at my company regarding print Ads. Because of the world-wide recession Ad budgets dropped. I wanted to know: Is anyone still buying print-ads? If so, who?

Everyone loves free fonts. There is one major problem with free fonts though. Suppose you’ve created a nice looking design using a free font like say, the Adorable. Nice font right? But after your client approved the design he sends you the actual text and suddenly you know why the font was free…

The fontdesigner didn’t bother to design all of the letters! Sure all of the normal ones are present but not things like ü, é, ø and more. Of course your clients now needs a German text in your design also. And guess what? Germans love the ü! It’s everywhere. The letter is not in the font, so InDesign can’t show it and just shows nothing at all. Now you have to search through a German text for a missing letter. Great.

After that lovely exercise you’re not out of the woods yet. Your client wants the headings to be bold. But there isn’t a bold in this font family! Now you need to result in faking the bold by adding a thin line around the type. This looks butt-ugly as the font was never designed to be bold. Thank God your client didn’t request an Italic!

Eigenlijk was alles okay. Aad Metz to the resque! What gives?

I’ve been working with InDesign CS5 for some time now and there are several small things that drove me nuts at first. (I’m a Creative Suite 3 migrant, so some of you CS4 users might already know about these things). First thing I noticed right away was I now need to pay close attention as to where exactly I click when I grab an InDesign image frame. Why? Well ,I didn’t know this but I tend to always grab an image frame in the center. When I work I pick up and move stuff around at lighting speed but I started noticing empty image frames. Now I knew I filled that frame and I also noticed the outline frame when I released it and jumped to another part of the page. But why was it empty now?

It was the new interface. Every image now has a circle when you ‘mouse-over’ the frame. But because I usually click the center of the frame when I want to grab it, I now clicked the new circle so InDesign activates the frame’s content instead of the frame itself. As I was moving things around and working rather fast I hadn’t noticed this at first. I’m sure I’ll get the hang of it, but for now I have to train myself to not click the center of an image frame. It looks like there’s no way to deactivate this new behavior.

A new update regarding ISO 12647 printers in the Netherlands has been provided by Henk Gianotten. As most of you reading this blog know, the purpose of ISO 12647 is to create and standardize the quality of print. There have been a few changes with regards to the last update. Some printers had to be removed from the list, either because they went ‘belly up’ or because they could (temporarely) no longer guarantee the ISO 12647 quality. This is not to say they suddenly became bad printers, but rather they were not able to produce the formal quality papers <del>ISO 12647</del> the Fogra, BVDM, UGRA, WAN-IFRA or SCGM organizations demands. When those printers do provide the documents they will once again be added to the official list. You can view the new list after the break.
<object classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000"

Wow. I received an official letter today. After more than six years at VosLibert, as of today I am officially fired. The paperwork will take some time (so I’ll probably be around until September or October) but VosLibert needs to cut costs. As I am a Senior Desk Top Publisher / Graphic Designer I am somewhat more expensive than the average Desk Top Publisher because my work is more diverse. Some very good friends have also been fired. They’ve basically gone and fired people at every department: Art Direction, Project Managers, Traffic Manager, Desk Top Publishing, Receptionist, Technical Support… It’s been a bit quiet lately buy I didn’t see this coming. Heck, just two weeks ago I had an official talk with Management and my position was not an issue. All was well. Anyway, as of today I am available for other jobs.

So if any of you guys (or girls) hear of a job for an all-round and good graphic designer / desktop publisher / project manager with a high degree of technical and workflow knowledge please let me know. I’m also looking for new Linkedin connections and I’d like to add the readers of this site to increase my network and the likelyhood of me hearing about a job.

One of the nice things of getting fired is all the postive feedback I’ve received. This one is from the VosLibert owner, Sander on my Linkedin: “Marco is een gedreven vakman, met grote technische know how en enthousiasme voor zijn vak.

Anyway, I’m still around until September but after that I just know I’m really gonna miss those guys. I’ve had the honor of working with a great team of dedicated professionals. How professional? Well just look at all the party’s and company-trips (even to Tunis, Africa!) we’ve had all those years and how we chose to communicate about them. What a team! (More examples after the break).
